Howdy! This is Curly
Bill! 11/17
We're off this
week (the first such occurrence in almost a year), and I'm hard at work,
editing video footage for our new series of videos, called "Fables Of The
West". One of those videos is now here on the website, and it's called
Chapter Two:
Ride 'em Cowboys. It's a sort of
music video to a song recorded by David Allan Coe (but more well known by
Juice Newton).
I had a good time
putting this together, and it started out as about 15 minutes of footage
that was shot by the wife of Magic Mike, on the final night of the Heart
'O Texas Fair & Rodeo in Waco, Texas. What you'll be seeing is Dusty
and me, helping haze the sheep for the Mutton Bustin'. We've been doing
this at quite a number of fairs, now a days, and I'm always amazed at
these kids (who are between the ages of 4 and 7) and their ability to do
something that absolutely horrifies each and everyone of 'em.( I have a
similar thing like that. They call it marriage). But we had a great time
down there in Waco...and I think it shows on the video!
Wild West Express Press Release...
July 2004
Get ready to meet
the wildest, most mixed-up outlaws to ever ride a trail straight out of
the Old West! The year 2004 marks the fourth year that WILD WEST
EXPRESS will be puttin’ smiles on the faces of hundreds of thousands at
fairs, festivals, concerts, and rodeos throughout the Western United
States. Their zany, unbridled brand of interactive improv comedy has made
them the most booked entertainment act of any kind for the past two years
in the Western United States.
Their recent alignment with national
talent agency Harmony Artists has aided them in their previously
unorganized takeover of America, and put them on the roster with a number
of major national artists including Judy Collins, Rita Coolidge, The Fab
Four and the Doo Wah Riders. The melding of the Harmony team (led by Jerry
Ross and Adrienne Crane) and the wild riders has been a match made in
Cowboy Heaven, according to Wild West Express Founder and Executive
Director Ken McMeans. "Jerry and Adrienne enable us to do what we do full
time, instead of just seasonally, like most performers," says Ken.
And the gang continues to
grow…this year's returning senior cast members, in addition to Ken ,
include Steve Rothblum, Eric Holmquist, Ron Graham, George Lindsey
Jr., Earl Baze, John Crater, Francisco ‘Paco’ Sanchez, Mike Piper,
and Lori Soto (as well as eight-year old cowgirl Jessica McMeans, real
life daughter of Founder Ken McMeans).
New riders for 2004
include D. Jennings, Dan Wiles, Robb Wolford, Marq Del Monte, Terry
Horton, Damian Gravino and several others soon to be announced. Earl
Baze Jr., Rich Warren, Ed Bengasser, and several other part time cast
members round out the crew.
With over 60 fairs in 2003 ( and 80 plus
expected this season ) Ken and his crew will be ridin’ hard on the
entertainment trail, with State Fairs in Alaska, Washington, Oregon,
Delaware, Idaho, Nevada, Illinois, Montana, and Texas, and County fairs
and festivals throughout the U.S. including events in California,
Wyoming, Arizona, Nevada, Montana, Washington, and Nebraska.
And they’re promising even more ‘bronc per
buck’ this go round, with more new faces and a constantly changing act-
every performance is different from the last, keeping both the audience
and the cast fresh. “Even we don’t know what kind of mayhem and
mischief will occur, we just know it will,” explains Event Coordinator
Eric Holmquist, now in his third year with the group. “And you can't plan
that kind of thing, it just happens..."
Now , some folks are sayin’ the
credit for the gang’s success actually belongs to their trusty Muppet-like
steeds- Skunk, Shorty, Moose, Spot , Smokey, Junior, and the rest of
the herd. Rattlesnake Jake (portrayed by Senior Cast Member Steve
Rothblum) , tends to disagree however. “These horses are constantly
trying to upstage us. It’s like they think they could do the show
without us. I gotta tell ya, I’ve started sleepin’ with one eye open at
nights now.”
Despite the occasional horse and
rider conflicts, the group is looking forward to further expansion in
forthcoming years, adding more and more states to their territory
with each successive season. But Ken assures us it’s not about quantity
and hints that the master plan is to try and take over the world with good
natured humor, done in an outrageous (albeit twisted), cowboy fashion.
Along with their hectic touring
schedule, there are hints of bigger things to come- Hollywood
television execs have been pondering ‘development’ ideas for a slightly
askew kids show, (the gang recently appeared on The Tonight Show and
performed at the Disney World Premiere of 'Home On The Range'), and
a full ‘Wild West’ merchandise line may be ready by fall. Ken McMeans
(who in addition to his leadership duties, portrays enthusiastic, but
confused, outlaw character ‘Curly Bill’) says the teams’ main focus ,
however, will remain the same- continually striving to be the best grounds
act in the fair industry. “No matter what the future may or may not have
in store for us, the fair circuit will always be our home, and 99% of what
we do.”
“We’re gonna make fairgoers smile- and
that’s gonna make us smile. Our goal is to make the guests forget
about their troubles for a short while- and then, when they have, we’ll
get ’em caught up in ours!”
What really makes these misfit
cowboys (and cowgirls) so successful, though, is their belief that it’s
never too late to have a happy childhood… and their ability to pass that
secret on.
Congratulations to our good friend Jim Abendschan for receiving this
year's top RMAF honor!

El Paso County Fair
Manager Receives Highest Industry Honor
El Paso County Fair and Events Complex
General Manager, Jim Abendschan, of Black Forest, was surprised by
receiving the fair industry's highest honor for a fair manager. He
is the 2004 Rocky Mountain Fair Association's Fair Manager of the Year.
Wyoming State Fair Manager and RMAF Board
Director Barney Cosner presented the award to the completely unaware
Abendschan, who was distracted by grandson during the nomination.
The nominations are kept secret for over six months, and the winner is
traditionally kept in the dark until the presentation. He was
presented with a belt buckle at the 79th Annual Rocky Mountain Association
of Fairs Conference this Saturday at the World Arena Doubletree Hotel.
"This recognition is really due to
everyone who helps put this event together," said Abendschan, "I really
appreciate the honor which reflects on everyone who works for the success
of this fair, from volunteers, to staff to sponsors and supporters.
This is means so much."
A surprising amount of
documentation accompanied the nomination made by Arlee and Betty Phillips
of Montana. Betty relays, "We've watched Jim struggle to make that
fair grow for so many years, we just wanted him to get some recognition
for what he does." Eighteen pages of accompanying documentation and
letters were included in this unusually well supported nomination which
was accepted unanimously by the award committee.
The conference, held for the first time
in Colorado and any point south of Wyoming, was the largest regional
conference of record. There are several regional associations, but
the RMAF is knows for its professionalism and networking opportunities.
Over 150 Agricultural Fairs are represented, from Canada to New Mexico,
and from Nevada to Nebraska.
The fair industry represents millions of
dollars of economic impact throughout the nation. Recognizing the
importance of this convention to Colorado Springs, it was endorsed by
Mayor Rivera and Terry Sullivan of the Colorado Springs Convention and
Visitors Bureau.
El Paso County
Commissioner Chuck Brown welcomed over 530 delegates to the conference,
Thursday, November 11th. He spoke of his support of the industry and
of the El Paso County Fair, which celebrates its hundredth anniversary
next summer.
Following is an excerpt from
the nomination:
Ten years ago,
Jim accepted the responsibility to produce the El Paso County Fair and
improve the neglected fairgrounds. He was handed a set of keys from
the outgoing manager who had weathered only one year at the hands of a
tremendously challenging fairboard, and that was the extent of Jim's
training for the job.
Through substantial adversity (the kind only fair managers understand) Jim
continues to put 200% into the fair. He is full-time firefighter as
well as full-time Fair Manager, but this has never kept him from pouring
his all into the event and the industry.
He began his relationship with this fair as young 4-H member, then as a
4-H dad and volunteer, and later as the Swine Superintendent and Beer Dock
Superintendent.
Jim strives to make the fair more professional and has integrated many new
facets of the community into the event planning process. Through his
guidance, the fair joined other professional associations such as the
Rocky Mountain Association of Fairs, International Association of Fairs
and Expositions, Wyoming Association of Fairs and the International
Festivals and Events Association. He served four years on the Board
of Directors for the Colorado Festival and Event Association. He was
instrumental in bringing a recent CFEA Convention to Colorado Springs as
well as the 2004 RMAF convention. He presented workshops and facilitated
discussions on: Fair/Event Association and Benefits of Membership,
Sponsorships, Fair Management and Fairboard Relations, and Carnival
Partnership. He served on IAFE committees for the Spring Managers'
Conference and the Federation of Fairs in 2002.
Jim
demonstrates what could be considered to be a rare quality among
professionals today; he truly cares about the event, the people and the
fair tradition. His desire for personal success is greatly
over-shadowed by his tenacious struggle to continually improve and event
and facility. In the past few years especially, he has had to keep
his countenance and enthusiasm during times of great strife from the
political arena.
It is in his
honest, good-hearted steadfastness that his leadership is felt.
Never succumbing to the easy road, he has preserved and increased the
integrity of the El Paso County Fair. He deserves this award for
many reasons, but how he reaches out to the whole industry is one of the
strongest. For instance, he organizes meetings of fair managers in
Colorado for networking and education. He seeks mentors to continue
to improve his background, while offering his counsel the every new fair
manager he meets.
Jim continues
to pour fresh ideas into the fair, from decorating the front gate with
bright scaffolding, to coordinating volunteers to clean the grounds before
the fair. Although confronting daily tribulations involving
government red tape, bureaucracy and the many unique challenges that
working with over hundreds of volunteers entail, Jim continues to strive
to produce the best fair possible. He and his family support and
sacrifice much to continue to provide a wholesome environment and quality
entertainment.
A few
of the many fair improvements due to Jim's efforts:
Ø
He began an entertainment sponsorship program, which progressed from a few
thousand dollars to over $34,000 in 2003.
Ø
Began a 501-3C to hold a liquor license and provide much needed revenue
for fair improvements.
Ø
Set up an annual clean up day with a local church, bringing over 200 eager
volunteers to the fairgrounds.
Ø
Many 4-H area improvements including cementing floor in hog barn, new
panels and building enclosures and additions.
Ø
Added an entire new entertainment program to the fair, including an
entertainment tent and new and exciting features.....
Some of the
many facility improvements he implemented include:
Ø
Weather-proofed the grounds completely with gravel and new drainage
Ø
Remodeled restrooms, kitchens, office ticket booths, Exhibit Hall, Main
Hall (Swink)
Ø
Procured improvements such as new rodeo arena, PA equipment, lighting,
yard equipment, signage, camper hookups, electric outlets, picnic tables,
tractors and implements, barricades, information booth, security lighting,
windows, storage, bleachers, arranged donation of the First Aide Building,
Ø
Began and maintained relationships to provide the Sheriff's Gateway
program, large trade outs with the State Fair, Calhan School trades and
school bus parking.
Ø
Began a landscaping program
Ø
Upgraded total electricity capability of fairgrounds
Ø
Re-keyed entire fairgrounds
A little of
his personal background:
Ø
Jim has an Associates Degree in Fire Science and studied Animal Production
at the Colorado State University.
Ø
Jim was on the 4-H Livestock Steering Committee for nine years and a
director on the El Paso County Fair Advisory Board for four years.
He has over 20
years of experience (in each of the following) Colorado Springs
Firefighters Protective Association, International Association of
Firefighters, and the Rocky Mountain Hazardous Material Association.
